ABOUT US AND OUR COMMITMENT
Larry Bishop grew up in McAlester and graduated from McAlester High
School in 1965. He attended Northeastern State College and Central
State University in Edmond. After graduating from Dallas Institute
of Mortuary Science, he worked as manager for Mills Corporation in
McAlester, then in Oklahoma City where he met and married Carol in
1979. They have 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren.
In 1989, Mills Corporation was sold and Larry came back to McAlester
with Carol
to build and open Bishop Funeral Service. Says Larry Bishop, "One of
my goals was to bring local ownership back to the funeral business
in
Pittsburg County.” In 1996, they added Southeast Oklahoma Cremation
Service in order to better serve the families who have come to trust
them.
They are proud of the continuity in management and service they have
provided and will continue in the capacity of owner/operator for as
long as they are physically able.
Larry loves working with people and helping them through the loss of
a loved one. He is a licensed funeral director and embalmer as well
as a licensed insurance agent. Carol is also licensed in insurance
so that she can assist families with pre-need arrangements. She is an
accountant and handles all record keeping responsibilities at the
funeral home and crematory.
COMMITMENT TO FAMILIES SERVED
At Bishop Funeral Service we are continually making improvements to our facility for increased family comfort in addition to giving them more choices. The latest additions were to enlarge our arrangement office, our selection room, add additional viewing rooms and add a gift shop which specializes in religious and inspirational gifts. We are the only funeral home in the area to offer a video tribute which can be shown on a large screen in the chapel. A selection of memorial books and packages is yet another way to offer more to the families we serve. We listen. . . . . so if you have comments or suggestions, please let us hear from you.
COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY
Larry is a member of the McAlester Rotary Club, a 32 degree Masonic member of McAlester Blue Lodge #96 and the Pittsburg County Shriners. He was one of the founders of the Hospice of McAlester, which is a non-profit hospice. For years, Carol has been a volunteer at the Mercy Medical Clinic and the Pittsburg County Genealogical and Historical Society, and they are both very active members of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church.
