crematorySoutheast Oklahoma Cremation Service

Because the families we serve place their trust in us, Bishop Funeral Service opened Southeast Oklahoma Cremation Service in 1996. It is the only crematory in Southeast Oklahoma and is located in a separate building, but on the same property as the funeral home. If you have questions about cremation that are not answered on this page, or if you would like to see the crematory, let us know. We would be happy to answer any questions you might have or show you any part of our facility.

Why is it important that the funeral home use their own crematory?

By having our own crematory, we can make sure the body is handled in a professional manner throughout the cremation process. We give assurance to the family that the cremated remains they receive are the actual cremated remains of their loved one. The body does not have to be transported to a third party and left unattended. We are able to return the cremated remains to the family within hours, not days.

What is cremation?

Cremation is a method of disposition of human remains. With cremation, a person's body
is reduced to small pieces of bone fragments by a process involving intense heat. The cremated remains are referred to as ashes or cremains.

Why do people select cremation?

It is simply a matter of preference for various reasons and is sometimes influenced by ethnic
background or family tradition. The concept that cremation is selected because of perceived
lower funeral costs or lack of land for earth burial is inaccurate. Funeral costs are based on
the merchandise and services which are selected. Cremation costs are also based on a
selection process.

If I choose cremation, can I still have a funeral?

Absolutely. Many people who choose cremation have a funeral or remembrance service.
Some have a casket present prior to cremation while others choose to have a memorial service and wait until after the cremation.

Can the body be viewed?

Yes. At Bishop Funeral Service, you can choose to have a private viewing with family, or you can have a public viewing. If there is to be public viewing, embalming and an appropriate viewing container such as a cremation casket or rental casket are essential.

Is an urn necessary?

No. Cremated remains are often returned in a small, black plastic container. If you are planning to use a columbarium, urn garden, mausoleum or cemetery, you will need to review any requirements they may have. Otherwise, remains can be put in any container of your choosing.

How long does the cremation process take?

Before the actual cremation can take place, the family must sign necessary authorizations, and a permit must be received from the State Medical Examiner. This can sometimes be done within 24 hours, or it can take several days, depending on the circumstances.
